REFLECTIONS AS THE HBA 2012 WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Topic #3 - The fundamentals of building a Ten Year Plan for Success

I have been asked by many people to expand on my remarks I made in May when I accepted the Woman of the Year Award from the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association. This continues a series of “mini” blogs to that end.

Topic #3 - The fundamentals of building a Ten Year Plan for Success

I have been a “ten year planner” since I was 8. This has allowed me to reinvent myself many times over - - Diplomat, Banker, Company Executive, Strategist, Broker/Dealer, Management Consultant, Civic and Corporate Board Member, Professor as well as Mother, Wife, Grandmother and Friend. Every decade I have dreamed ahead ten years to how I would like to be known and involved in the world - - and then I have set out on a journey of discovery to get “here from there”. This means creating a road map with milestones of what critical experiences I would love to have, what knowledge and skills would I like to acquire and who would I like to be in relationship with.

Topic #2 - - Mothers as Courageous Leaders

Topic #2 - - Mothers as Courageous Leaders

All of us know how courageous mothers are - - and all that they do and sacrifice for others. But most do not know the real origin of Mother’s Day. Julia Ward Howe, the composer of the Battle Hymn of the Republic was sickened by the carnage of the Civil war in the US. In 1870, appalled at that time by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, she declared a Mothers’ Day Proclamation for Peace and had it translated into French, Spanish, Italian, German and Swedish and disseminated internationally.

”arise arise …..great congress of women of all nationalities who have hearts, whether your baptism be of water or of tears… We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies… and our children shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience…We women of one country will be too tender to those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.” She continued, ” …let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace…”

REFLECTIONS AS THE HBA 2012 WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Topic # 1 - - Inspirational Role Models

As I get ready for the HBA WOTY “busy season” with the HBA European and National Leadership Conferences in Basel and Orlando in October and November, I have been reflecting on the key messages from my remarks at the Woman of the Year award ceremony in May (see previous blog for full transcript). Since then I have been asked by many of you to explain “What did you mean by…”, or “Could you tell us more about your thoughts on…”

To that end, I thought I would expand on some of the key messages and themes that I highlighted during my speech in May. For the next seven weeks, I will excerpt some video clips from the speech and share some more thoughts on the specific topic. I welcome your replies and observations to these issues that we have all had to tangle with as professional women.

By the Numbers

I spent a fascinating day recently at the Cegedim Life Sciences Forum 2012 hosted by the incomparable Cegedim Relationship Management President, Angela Miccoli and attended by over 200 professionals and executives in commercial operations at life sciences companies. I was there to kick off the Forum with a discussion of HC’s dramatcially changing landscape - - what we call The Third Place; healthcare anytime, anywhere the patient is, not just in the doctors’ office and hospital.

The theme of the Forum was “Evolve, Innovate, Lead” and the focus was reframing the importance of innovation to include the transformation of Commercial Operations from selling product to engaging with customers. The epicenter of how health care is produced, delivered, consumed and paid for is moving to where the patient is and this rapid shift is being fueled by Big Data, ubiquitous technology and the empowered super consumer - - which includes the patient, his or her caregiver as well as the doctors (HCPs). Many of the executives I talk to “get this” intuitively but are slow to make dramatic changes to their successful commercial business models in an industry that has ten year selling cycles.

Being Strategic about Strategic Partnerships

I spend a lot of my professional time working with senior pharmaceutical executives on conceiving and constructing innovative partnerships with “non-traditional” players who are coming into the health care space as a means to accelerate pharma’s business model from the products they make to the patients they serve. (see EY Progressions 2012 - The third place - Healthcare everywhere www.ey.com/p12)

As Pharma companies extend their business model to the ultimate healthcare consumer and commit to delivering health outcomes and not just the pill, there is great opportunity to collaborate with payers, providers, pharmacies, retailers, consumer product companies, telecom, technology and other sectors who have assets and attributes necessary for architecting the new business models in health.

Insights from Economist Pharma Summit - Finding New Directions

Pharma Summit, London. Here are some insights that are “sign posts” of Pharma 3.0 where the patient is in the middle, not the product and the focus is on delivering health outcomes to individuals at an economic benefit for health systems and society.

Facts in Europe. — 50% of patients don’t take medicines. This is made up of 1/3  don’t fill their prescriptions; 1 in 10 stop taking their pills; 1/2 forget to finish regimen and 1/4 of all patients don’t take recommended dose. This costs pharma companies in Europe $125B and causes 200,000 premature deaths per year.

Focusing on real of use patient data and offering an integrated medication support package with a suite of adherence services can make a real difference and provide the base line improvements that support demonstration of value. These real use data will also provide key insights on patient behavior that will help build incentives and interventions to improve adherence and safety.
